From the back of the seats, along both sides as well as along the rear opening, this baby seals right to the very edges of the cargo area. There was never any plastic smell or anything unpleasant. The surface is very easy to clean, but is also a little bit slick and things tend to slide around back there so I'm looking for a good cargo bin with a non-slip bottom that will help.
